How to Make a Gingerbread House

Nothing says Christmas quite like a beautifully decorated, homemade Gingerbread House. Whether you’re a first-time baker or just looking for a fun baking project with the kids, try your hand at this deliciously festive treat that is just as fun to assemble as it is to eat!

This recipe features vegan butter which can be substituted with regular butter.

  • 250g of vegan butter, melted

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Start by lining your Le Creuset Baking Sheet with baking paper. Combine the flour, cinnamon, ginger, and treacle sugar in a large bowl. Pour in the melted butter and mix until a dough forms – add the extra water if the dough is too dry.

Divide the dough into 4 equally sized balls. Roll one dough ball out onto a floured surface until it is around ½ a cm thick and, using the templates provided, cut out your desired shapes.

Repeat with the remaining dough balls until you have 6 panels and a few gingerbread men.

Place the gingerbread panels on the baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.

For the icing, add the aquafaba (chickpea brine) to a bowl and whisk with an electric mixer until frothy – this takes around 5-6 minutes. Next, add the vanilla and mix again.

Sift the icing sugar into the mixture in batches and mix until the icing is thick. Transfer some of the mixture into a piping bag with a thin piping tip.

Pipe your desired design onto each panel and then allow to dry. Change the piping tip to a thicker one (this will be used to assemble the gingerbread house).

To assemble, start by placing the front piece of your gingerbread house against a can to stand upright. Pipe down the side of one panel and then press against the front panel – repeat with the other side and the back panel.

To assemble the roof, pipe a thick line of icing on each top edge of the gingerbread house. Place your roof pieces on top of that, then allow to dry.

Once dry, add additional piping and decorate with candy canes, sweets, marshmallows, and icing sugar.
